Interview

So we have recently interviewed Yung Kuma, we spoke to him about his passion and his love for Grime. We met Yung in the place he grew up, Hackney.

So what’s going on in your life fam?

Urrgh I’m just trying to.. I’m not trying, I am maintaining a normal lifestyle, independently at the same time tryna make music that i enjoy and then live the life in order to make the music, soooo.. yeah.

It’s interesting, I’ll tell you why.. Because, it’s funny to me cos i look at a lot of artists who are dying to get a record deal, they're dying to get a major deal. You lot, Boy Better Know, just seem happy being independent, how do you kinda live a certain lifestyle making music you want to do?

Right, at first, it starts off with what you love doin, i love making music, i love drawing, i love painting, i love BMXing and there's loads of other things i like doing yeah? But i LOVE music, i love the feeling music gives me, especially my own music or the music that i like if you get what im saying. So i needed to find a way to make that music and be happy, but in the UK there are certain things you have to do, you have to pay TAX, if i was in New York id be doing music in a different way, so in the UK there are things you have to do, to keep a business running. Luckily i have lots of friends around me that helped me set up my company, set up my website, set up my merch, that has helped me so much up to today.

yeah yeah i feel ya man, i feel ya...Have you ever thought about branching into any other music genres, such as hip-hop?

Listen, I've been making music all my life yeah, i was around before grime was even a thing, i was around when people were calling it House, Jungle or Garage, so people who make that music and listen to that music are scared to produce anything else because the audience is so intense and so protective over it and they will hate anything if it’s not grime. So us grime artists don't like to create any other music than grime. I do have a single that is a bit hip-hop, and it's one of my least popular tracks you get me? But i will never let it bring me down cos i was here before it and I’ll be here after it, sooo nah grime is what i am, what i love, grime is what i live for.

Why do you think your fans are so protective over the Grime scene, why do ya think that?

Cos we are a hybrid sound man! You always here American accents in Grime, cos hip-hop influences us, but now i could be talking normally and you couldn't tell if i was spitting bars or just talking you see what I’m saying, Grime is such a unique sound and that's why people love it and worship it.

How did the name "Yung Kuma"come along?

When you're younger, everyone wanted to be an MC and write lyrics, but first you need a nick name. It was a bit easy for me cos when i first started spitting you know, i was only 14...so i started young, hence "Yung". Kuma came around when i was watching an anime series, and one of the characters was called Kuma, and didn’t know what it meant, so i got on the bus and went to the library so i could find out what this word meant. And when i arrived i found a Japanese to English dictionary, so i found 'Kuma',and i saw it meant "Troll", and this appeals tome cos is see myself as quite a joker, I like to mess about, so yeah... that’s where the name came from.

My Photography

Creating My Artists

I am going to create my artist around the "grime" genre so he will resale appeal to my target audience. I will do this by specifically choosing the clothes, colors, appearance, background, location and content.clothing, colors, appearance, background, location and content.

Main Artist

Yung Kuma - Yung Kuma will be an 19 year old rapper, he has finished school and wants to take up creating music for his job, he loves what he does and making music is his life. He is a grime artist, this means he will have to look rough and edgy. He has a very unique fashion sense and wants to stand out from other grime Artist. In the magazine he will express this and he will also talk about his new album. He has released lots of songs that have been quite popular in the grime scene, so being on the front cover of this magazine will promote his music and will hopefully help him in becoming more successful. Growing up for  Yung Kuma was difficult as his parents weren't really around for him and did not support him with his music. His inpsirations growing up were mainly Leathal Interjection and R U double F. His music style reflects this.

Feature Article Artisit

Big Dwarfy -  Big Dwarfy is an up and coming grime artist who has just finished his higher education. He is a white, 18 year old boy who has a very big passion for grime. He has had a very normal life beacsue he is close with some already well knonw grime artsists like Lethal Bizzle and Skepta. He is more recognisable beacuse of this. His style isnt the normal type of grime, agressive, voilent and edgy, his style is more humourousand he likes to show this in his music. He is still very childish and just likes to have fun, he does things most teenage boys would do, such as; sports and video games.

Photography Planning

Location

Location is key, it has to link in with the genre otherwise it wonk look right and it will look out of place.

My magazine is in the grime genre, so the location of the photography will have to be quite rough and dirty, like an ally or an urban city such as London. Places like this connote poverty, danger and uncertaincy. This links in with the rap scene perfecty and will be very appropriate for my magazine cover.

Framing

Framing is very important when taking your photographs. You have to think about what you want to be in the photo and what you don't. The framing can make the model look very biug or very small.

Lighting

Lighting is also very important as it adds a massive effect to the photo, but it depends on what time of day it is beacsue i belive natural lighting alsways looks best. Typically in the morning or at dusk are the best time for natural lightins so i will probably take my photos at these times.

Re-Shoots

I will be taking about 30-50 photos but i will be narrowing this down to about 10, and then i will pick the one i like the most and use that for my magazine cover. The Re-Shoot will be taken if i am not happy with the exsisting photos.

Masthead Development

This is the first Masthead idea, it is bold and stands out. It is very slick and the backwards letters make the masthead stand out. The letter "R" is in red just to make the masthead less standard and makes catches the eye of the reader.

This is the second Masthead idea, It is a lot more exciting that the first one. It looks like it has fire around the edge of the text. This links in with the whole rap scene and how it is aggressive and violent

This is the third Masthead idea, it is a lot different to the other fonts as its very distorted. The scattered text at the bottom makes the mast head unique as it makes it more enticing.

This is the final Masthead Idea, its rough and has a red line running behind the text. Its different to the other fonts because it has two layers where as the others do not. This makes the font more interesting.

I have asked 15 people which masthead they prefer and the genreal consent was the first one. They all said that it fitted in well with the name "Gryme".

Colours Connotations

Red - When you see the colour red, things that pop to mind are such as anger, hate, danger, fire, heat, warmth, blood and love and determination. Its a very emotional colour and very eye catching, if it is used on a mast head, it grabs the attention and attract the reader to buy the magazine.

Blue - When you see the colour blue, you think of the sky and water. Blue is symbolised trust, intelligence and wisdom. Also blue isassociated with health, as it has a calming effect. It also gives the sense of sadness, "I'm feeling blue". This states that the person is feeling sad or depressed. Blue is also very masculine, it is a very good colour for magazines targeted to boys/men because it appeals to them. This will be effective for a mast head beacsue it will atract male readers and it is also very eye catching.
Green - When you see the colour green, nature is the first thing you think of, it symbolises freshness and growth. Another connotation is Safety, like a first aid box, they are mostly green, so when we see green we think health and safety. Green also connotes GO, e.g. at traffic lights, whereas Red symbolises STOP. Green would be a suitable masthead for a helthy or safety magazine.
Orange - When you see the colour orange, you instantly think of joy, enthusiasm, happiness and creativity. Its a little bit like red and resembles heat but its not as aggressive as Red. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. I dont thiink Orange would be a good choice, it doesnt contrast that well with othe colours, it could be effective in a nature magazine.

Yellow - When you see the colour Yellow, joy, happiness and energy. The reason yellow is linked to happiness i think is because you think of sunshine and nice weather which is nice. It can also be linked with cowardice. It can show caution/danger. Its also shows caution/danger, like at a crime scene, there is yellow tape to show cation, or a wet floor sign.

White - When you see the colour White, you think light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the colour of perfection. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation.

Black - When you see the colour Black, you think of power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown, like black horses. It usually has a negative connotation . Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner. When designing for a gallery of art or photography, you can use a black or grey background to make the other colours stand out. Black contrasts well with bright colours, combined with red or orange – other very powerful colours – black gives a very aggressive colour scheme.
